Description: The Pearl of Great Price: Being a Choice Selection from the Revelations, Translations and Narrations of Joseph Smith, First Prophet, Seer, and Revelator to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Author: Smith, Joseph Title: The Pearl of Great Price: Being a Choice Selection from the Revelations, Translations and Narrations of Joseph Smith, First Prophet, Seer, and Revelator to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Publication: Salt Lake City, UT: Printed at the Latter-day Saints' Printing and Publishing Establishment, 1878 Edition: First American Edition Description: Hardcover. 71pp. Octavo [23 cm] Rebacked with blue cloth. With portions of the 1/4 blue pebbled cloth, and with the gray green paper covered boards. The title page is reprinted on the front board within a ruled border with corner ornaments. This copy resembles Copy No. 2 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Church History Catalog. Paper restoration to top fore-edge corners of boards. Hinges reinforced with Japanese tissue. Some moisture staining, including several moisture rings to boards. Front free endpaper absent. Small tissue repair to rear free endpaper. Sporadic pencil markings in text. Still presents rather well. Includes all three facsimiles from The Book of Abraham, including facsimile #2, as a three part folding plate. Fold-out plate is very nice. Very Good. The first edition of the Pearl of Great Price was printed in Liverpool in 1851 against Brigham Young's wishes. Coincidentally, no other editions of this LDS doctrinal work were published again, until after Brigham Young's death in 1877. Thus making this 1878 edition of the Pearl of Great Price, not only the 2nd edition overall, but the first Salt Lake City edition and the first American edition of this work as well. In addition to the material in the 1851 edition, revisions to the book of Moses were made from Joseph Smith's revision of the holy scriptures. Also, "the revelation of plural marriage" (Doctrine and Covenants 132) was added. Contains the 'Book of Abraham'. Flake/Draper 6167. Howes S636.
