Description: Title: The Wild Party Author: Joseph Moncure March Publisher: Privately Printed Edition: Limited Edition of 1000 copies, of which this is number 174 Date Printed: 1929 Description: This is John Fowles's personal copy, and bears his bookplate to the half title page, under which he has written "a bizarre piece of Jazz Age doggerel", which seems fair comment. Limited numbered edition of 1000 copies, of which this is number 174, privately printed in Germany. The front free endpaper has a typewritten note on the publishing history of the book. The book is in attractive condition with just the slightest hint of wear, and slight fading to the spine (see pictures). Very light browning to prelims. Internally clean. Binding sound and square, with small crack to paper at front hinge, not affecting the soundness of the binding in any way. A very nice copy of this scarce book. Joseph Moncure March, 1899-1977, was a leading figure in and chronicler of the Jazz Age. He worked on the New Yorker's Talk of the Town section in the early twenties, and went on to write this long Jazz Age poem, The Wild Party. Because of its uninhibited alcohol and sex scenes it struggled to find a publisher, and was banned in parts of the US.
