Peterson Prize, Entry Significance: The present Johnson County Courthouse in Franklin, Indiana is the fifth courthouse, and the seventh building to have the honor of holding court in Johnson County. The decision to build this courthouse was made by the Board of Commissioners on March 26, 1879, and four months later, plans drawn by the architect, George W. Buenting, were adopted. The courthouse is a three-story, red brick, rectangular block building with details of cut limestone on a highly rusticated stone base. The solution is quite eclectic, as Buenting employed Classical, Italian and French Romanesque, and Mannerist forms and details in an imaginative and positive manner. The building is undeniably the most significant architectural statement in the county and one of the finest existing nineteenth century county courthouses in Indiana.
