Description: Original painting of a polar bear and cub on an ice flow. "Adrift". By 19th-20th c. British artist John Trivett Nettleship (1847-1902). John Trivett Nettleship was born in Kettering, Northants. on February 11th 1841. He gave up a career in the law to become an art student, studying at Heatherley's art school and at the Slade. During the 1870s he was part of the group of artists called 'The Brotherhood', of which the other members were John Butler Yeats, George Wilson and Edwin John Ellis. Nettleship was best known for his paintings of animals, displayed at exhibitions in London and elsewhere. He also contributed illustrations to several books, and published essays on the poems of Robert Browning. He died in London on August 31st 1902. Watercolor and gouache on board. Signed J.T. Nettleship 1900. Mounted in custom frame with distressed cream and gilt finish. Measures 18" x 27 1/4". Framed size 23 1/2" x 32 3/4". Very good condition. Nettleship also painted this same scene in oil. It is one of his best known works and has been reproduced as prints, in books and other decorative items.
