Original plum cloth with decorative border stamped in blind, gilt title to spine. Corners are rubbed, spine cover is age-darkened and worn with cracks and losses. Original brown endpapers. Small minor stain on the verso of the half title, otherwise text is clean and unmarked, only occasional foxing or age darkening. The first edition of this important work by Mill. "It was because he regarded the writings and sayings of Sir William Hamilton as the great fortress of intuitional philosophy in Great Britain that Mill undertook to counter his pretensions." The book is still quite sound but priced low to reflect the condition of the spine covering.
