Description: JOHN SINGER SARGENT WAS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PORTRAIT PAINTER OF HIS ERA AND HERE HANDWRITES A LETTER, TO A POSSIBLE PATRON (“DEAR MADAME”), SCHEDULING A VISIT WHERE “YOU WILL FIND ME AT YOUR DISPOSAL…I WILL HAVE MANY DAYS AND EVENINGS TO DEDICATE ENTIRELY TO YOU…EITHER IN LONDON OR IN THE COUNTRYSIDE.” JOHN SINGER SARGENT (1856-1925) HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, “John S. Sargent”, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, on Arts Club, Hanover Square letterhead, 11 May, to “Dear Madame”, in French (with full translation in English), in part: “It’s been a week since I came to the Circle and I regret it very much because I find a letter from you without date and that may have waited a long time. In that case what would you think of me, who would have answered you immediately if you had written top me at 13 Tite Street Chelsea where I live…I hasten to tell you that I will be delighted to see you arrive …you will find me…at your disposal…During the month I have a few commitments to dinner and some portrait sessions, but I will have many days and evening to dedicate entirely to you. Either in London or in the countryside…Always write me 13 Tite St. Chelsea London as it may still be days before I receive your letters. I fear that this has already caused you astonishment and anxiety about my character….” In 1884 his daring portrait of Madame Gautrau ("Madame X") aroused such controversy at the Paris Salon that he decided to settle in London, taking up residence in Whistler's former home and studio in Tite Street, Chelsea. The Art Club was founded by a group of artists dissatisfied with the entrenched attitudes of the Royal Academy, the club embraced the Parisian avant-garde and went on to become the dominant force in British art in the new century. The group mounted their first show in 1886, at which about fifty artists were represented, including paintings by John Singer Sargent. This especially nice content, handwritten and signed letter is in fine condition, with the usual fold lines and minor age toning. #13073ZWBB Certificate of Authenticity This item has been authenticated and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by our parent company, History Makers Autographs.
