Author: Potter, John Title: Archaeologia Graeca: or, the antiquities of Greece ... A new edition. To which is added an appendix, containing a concise history of the Grecian states, and a short account of the lives and writings of the most celebrated Greek authors; by G. Dunbar.. Publication: Edinburgh: Stirling & Slade [et al.], 1818 Description: 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xiv, 527, [1], [16] index; [iii]-viii, 422, 112, [22] index; engraved folding map, 32 engraved plates; overall a very good and sound set in a handsome binding in contemporary quarter tan calf over marbled boards, black morocco labels on gilt-paneled spines. This edition features a life of the author, by Robert Anderson and an appendix, containing a history of the Grecian states, as well as a short account of the lives and writings of celebrated Greek authors by George Dunbar. First published at Oxford in 1697-99, this became a popular work that was reprinted many times through the mid-19th century, including a 1702 Latin translation. The material herein was "incorporated, immediately upon its appearance, into the Thesaurus of Gronovius, 'whose warm eulogies,' says Hallam, 'attest its merits'" (DNB). The first volume contains treatises on the civil government of Athens and the religion of Greece; the second includes that on the military affairs of the Greeks and some of their miscellaneous customs, including sections on the Olympic games. Potter was a Fellow at Lincoln College, Oxford, when he wrote this book, and was later Bishop of London and Archbishop of Canterbury.
