TWICE SIGNED 07/19/1811 CO-SIGNED BY: PENISTON (VISCOUNT MELBOURNE I) LAMB - HFSID 81174 COL. JOHN McMAHON; VISCOUNT MELBOURNE I As Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales (the Prince Regent and future King George IV), McMahon asks Melbourne, father of the future Prime Minister, to write on the Prince's behalf to the Lord Chief Baron of Scotland. Melbourne pens a note to himself that he has complied with this request. Third Person Autograph Letter signed twice (in text and in return address): "Col. McMahon", 1 page, 7½x9 affixed to a 7¾x9½ sheet. Carlton House, 1811 July 19. In full: "Col. McMahon presents his best Compliments to Lord Melville, & has the honor to acquaint him, by command of the Prince Regent, that His Royal Highness, requests his Lordship will have the goodness to write to the Lord Chief Baron of Scotland a Letter couched in the spirit & meaning of the enclosed Memorandum." {The enclosure is not present, but a notation in McMahon's hand refers to its content: "as to the Chief Baron being appointed Lord President of the Court of Sessions". Autograph Note, unsigned, in Melbourne's hand: "Wrote to the Chief Baron in conformity to the enclosure, 20th July". Colonel JOHN McMAHON (1754-1817), originally a serving person, joined the British Army and - serving in North American during the Revolution - endeared himself to several high ranking officers. Returning to England, he was befriended by two sons of King George III, both future Kings themselves: the Prince of Wales (future George IV) and Duke of Clarence (future William IV). McMahon soon made himself indispensable to the Prince of Wales, functioning as his Private Secretary (and - rumor had it - as a liaison with the Prince's many paramours). The rewards of a grateful Prince included a Parliamentary seat, purchased for McMahon in 1802. In the House of Commons, McMahon was known for his strict obedience to the Prince's wishes. When this letter was written, the Prince had just been named Regent (February 5, 1811), owing to the insanity of his father, King George III. The Prince eventually lost confidence in McMahon, but had to deal carefully with a man privy so many secrets. Carlton House was the official residence of the Prince of Wales, built by him at great expense and very grudgingly funded by his father the King. PENISTON LAMB (1745-1828), the First Viscount Melbourne, was first elected to the House of Commons in 1784. (As an Irish Peer, he still sat in Commons rather than the House of Lords.) Lamb is chiefly remembered as the father of William Lamb, the Second Viscount Melbourne, British Prime Minister (1834, 1835-1841) and mentor to the young Queen Victoria. He was probably not the biological father of William. His wife, the former Elizabeth Milbanke, had several aristocratic lovers including the Prince of Wales. This connection proved useful to Lord Melbourne, however; he used it to acquire the office of Gentleman of the Bedchamber and, in 1815, an English peerage. Multiple folds. Heavily toned. Ink notes (unknown hand) on bottom margin. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Soiled. Faint stains on bottom left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
