Description: The Causes of the American Civil War -- a Letter to the London Times by John Lothrop Motley. Published by James G. Gregory, New York, in 1861. Softcover (pamphlet), 36 pages plus advertisements at end. This pamphlet, published in 1861 soon after the Civil War commenced, contains a lengthy letter submitted to the Times of London. The author aimed to explain to Europeans why the American states were at war with each other. The pamphlet is markedly pro-Union and comes down hard on the Southern arguments for secession and states' rights. The pamphlet is in nice condition. There is a pen signature in script on the title page ("Th. Griffith 1870"). Other than that, the book contains no pen/pencil notations, bookplates, library markings, or similar flaws. There is some wear to the spine and corners and some light soiling on the covers. John Lothrop Motley (April 15, 1814 – May 29, 1877) was an American author and diplomat. As a popular historian, he is best known for his works on the Netherlands, the three volume work The Rise of the Dutch Republic and four volume History of the United Netherlands. As United States Minister to Austria in the service of the Abraham Lincoln administration, Motley helped to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates in the American Civil War -- a task that was consistent with the apparent mission of this pamphlet. Motley later served as Minister to the United Kingdom (Court of St. James) during the Ulysses S. Grant administration. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
