Hunter was born on September 26 in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania in 1934. He studied at Pomona College where he received his B.A. in 1956, and at Fremont Graduate School where he received his M.F.A. in 1958. He was especially active in lithography in the 1960s at Tamarind Lithography Workshop and in the 1970s and '80s at Lakeside Studio, Michigan. Hunter taught at Ohio State University from 1960 to 1963; was a guest artist at Indiana University, Bloomington, summer 1963; associate professor at California State University from 1965; and a guest artist at Tamarind Lithography Workshop, 1969.
