Description: John D. Rockefeller Signed Missouri Kansas & Texas Railway Company stock certificate, approx. 11.5 x 7.25" 100 shares of preferred stock issued to John D. & Wm Rockefeller (John's younger brother). The certificate was issued November 1890. They turned around and sold/transferred the stock to Colgate Hoyt on December 1, 1890. Colgate Hoyt was a financier specializing in railroads, but he may have been a bit of a confidence man who "fleeced" Rockefeller. When the December 1, 1890 sale/transfer was made, it appears that John first signed the certificate as "J.D. & Wm Rockefeller", which was not how the certificate was issued. So he may have had to go back and add an "ohn" just below and to the right of his first initial. Apparently, this addition satisfied the transfer agent. The stock certificate shows all the normal wear of a cancelled certificate - holes punched in strategic locations, discoloring along the left-hand side where it was affixed in a stock certificate binder, and general aging and light handling wear as it is ~135 years old.
