Description: Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA- Cathbert's Building - ARCHITECTURE: Johannesburg is the capital of the Gauteng province, and the financial hub of South Africa. Founded in 1886, the city is located in the Witwatersrand region, which has vast gold deposits. The town experienced rapid growth as the gold deposits were exploited and is now South Africa's largest urban center. As a result, the Johannesburg area has a wide variety of architecture, from early Art Nouveau to post-modern buildings. Hillbrow, for example, contains many buildings constructed since the 1950s, including the Hillbrow Tower. The firm of WM Cuthbert & Co, shoe merchants, was established in 1882. Their Johannesburg building, located at Pritchard & Eloff Streets, was designed by architects Stucke & Bannister and was completed in 1904. It rapidly became a major landmark in the mining town and retains many of its Victorian details. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 27 June 1986. This Divided Back Era (1907-15) postcard is in good condition, but there's a slight puncture to the card near the tower of the building.
