Description: Offering this absolutely monumental, 14 ½” diameter porcelain charger by modernist artist and ceramicist Joel Edwards. I estimate this piece comes circa the mid to late 1960’s and shows strong influences of the minimalist, abstract expressionist and action painters of the preceeding decade - artists like Al Held, Ad Reinhardt & Joseph Albers. I’m going to resist the urge to go on and on about this artwork but I will say that the longer I looked at this piece over the years (it hung in my entryway) the more complex and gripping it became and the more and more I was intrigued by its composition. At first glance it may seem like some lines and a color field but remember Edwards was an artist who got his MFA from Otis Art Institute, one of the finest art schools in the world, at a time in the 1950’s when theories of abstract expressionism were waning and ideas like minimalism, color field painting, constructivism and conceptual art were working their way into new artistic disciplines - none of this is dashed off or not carefully thought out. The piece evokes tumultuous balance, sound, waves, vibrations. Joel Edwards usually worked on a fairly modest scale so monumental pieces like this over twelve inches are pretty uncommon. It’s just an utterly fascinating piece of art and the enormous size and weight of the charger just emphasize these characteristics all the more. In perfect condition with no chips, cracks or damage of any kind. 14 ½” diameter by 2” high and just shy of 9 pounds (9 pounds!!) in weight. Well signed with an incised signature on the back. This piece is a star of any American ceramics collection or modern art collection. I acquired this piece here in Los Angeles many years ago at an auction of modern and contemporary art that was held for charity at a private home. Ledger notes at the time of this purchase mentioned a Frank Stella lithograph and Cy Twombly pencil drawing that I wanted but was extremely outbid on so I took all the funds I had earmarked for the event and put them into winning this wonderful piece. I hope someone will give it a great home in their collection and appreciate it as much as I have. This fantastic Joel Edwards charger comes from a studio pottery collection that includes Howard Kottler, Frans Wildenhain, Laura Andreson, Betty Feves and many others, all items I have collected in my travels over the years. Recent health issues have compelled me to find new homes for much of this art that has given me so much joy. Some of the most important pieces will be left to AMOCA and other institutions but many others will be listed here in the near future along with other items I am passing along.
