Description: An interesting high-footed studio pottery deep chawan tea bowl by leading British potter Jim Malone. Stoneware. Korean hakeme slip decoration with iron brushwork under a clear ash glaze. Potter's marks to the foot (JM personal mark and "A" for Ainstable). Excellent condition, as new. Dimensions (approximate): 13cm x 13cm x 10cm. This particular example of Jim's work has an unusually high foot, almost taking on a chalice form. I think in Japan they might be inclined to classify it as a "bajohai" or horse-riding cup, in which by tradition the extended foot allowed the user a superior grip while in the saddle. Nice thing either way.
