Description: Gorgeous little study print by the famous illustrator and artist Jemima Blackburn who influenced and was known as the "real life Jemima Puddleduck" - the British Museum is full of Jemima's historic illustrations This sketch is not titled. In 1980's Jemima's family, including her Great Grandson Alan Blackburn, released some of the artist's unpublished works from her huge portfolio of work. The family released a selection of sketches and printed a limited number of 500 for each print. Each print is hand numbered Condition is a little worse for wear - it has never been framed but I have listed it as "Used" because of the light markings to the print - condition is reflected in lower price (I have an unmarked and new print list this also for sale) Artist: Jemima Blackburn (1823-1909)Source: Original licensed reprint by family of Jemima Blackburn, hand numbered 3 of 500 print run Paper Size 21.5 x 22.4 cm Image Size 14.5 x 13.2 cm Jemima's family lived local to our small art gallery in Highlands of Scotland, released a series of limited edition reprints of some of her work - I have 3 left for sale Jemima Wedderburn Blackburn (1 May 1823 – 9 August 1909) was a Scottish painter whose work illustrated rural life in 19th-century Scotland. One of the most popular illustrators in Victorian Britain, she illustrated 27 books. Her greatest ornithological achievement was the second edition of her Birds from Nature (1868). Most of the illustrations were watercolours, with early paintings often including some ink work. Her many watercolours showed daily family life in the late 19th-century Scottish Highlands as well as fantasy scenes from children's fables. She achieved widespread recognition under the initials JB or her married name Mrs. Hugh Blackburn. Within that name lies a personal tale: the choice of Jemima was a tribute to a Scottish artist who had been influential in Beatrix Potter’s early development as a writer and illustrator and who remained lifelong in her high regard. On her 10th birthday, Potter had received a copy of a book of paintings by Jemima Blackburn, one of the most respected ornithological artists of the time. In due course, the two were to meet.
