Captioned at lower margin of image: "Now therefore I Jefferson Davis/President of the Confederate States of America,-/all I want is to be let alone!" Imprinted at lower margin of mount: "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by B. Leverett Emerson in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachusetts, 129 Washington Street, Boston". This carte-de-visite relates to the capture of Jefferson Davis in 1865. Davis was reputedly disguised in his wife's clothing at the time of his arrest. Jefferson Davis (1808-1889), the only President of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865), was Secretary of War in the Cabinet of President Franklin Pierce (1853-1857). A West Pointer and veteran of the Mexican War battles of Monterrey and Buena Vista (under Zachary Taylor) was also an experienced legislator. He represented Mississippi in the House (1845-1846) and the Senate (1847-1851, 1857-1861), leaving the U.S. Senate after his state seceded. Creased at upper corners, chipped at lower left corner. Soiled and stained, not at image. Lightly soiled on verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
