Author Ann Nolan Clark said that Jean Charlot’s single double page illustration in the book was in large part responsible for “SECRET OF THE ANDES” winning the Newbery Award 1953 Jean Charlot (1898-1979) was a French and naturalized American painter and illustrator. He has been called one of the greatest children’s book illustrators. He illustrated 27 children’s books (16 completed in 1950s). His illustrations are unique in that Charlot never used the four color halftone process. He disliked the pattern of tiny of dots it created and how it affects the illustrations. Which means he had artistic control over the printing of the images. Charlot used the line process in his early book illustrations and in the 1950s he adopted the acetate process - where the acetate film image is transferred directly to the printing plate without camera intervention. The end result is timeless. The printed picture approaches his original ideas. Illustration Details - Colors: Red, Blue,Brown, Black. 2 line vignettes in black.
