We prefer to cold stratify in the refrigerator using distilled water and sterile sponges or towels. The length of stratification required depends on the specific seed. Pines normally require around a 30 day cold stratification while most maples require closer to 90 days. It is important to plan your stratification to end near the last frost in your area to ease their transition from seed to seedling.
