He honed his skills in traditional Japanese ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before securing a position at the Imperial Household Museum upon graduation. While providing stability, this job also allowed him to explore his artistic endeavors. Despite the security it offered, Aoyama Masaharu chose to retire from this position in the late 1930s.Primarily recognized as a painter, Aoyama Masaharu was deeply influenced by the sosaku hanga art movement in his printmaking pursuits. His print portfolio consisted of works that were self-carved, self-printed, and self-published, alongside those published by Ishiyama.
