Born as Minoru, he learned pottery techniques from his father, the renowned first-generation Yamada Jozan, from a young age. In Showa 22, he inherited the name Sho-Jozan, and after his father's passing, he became the third generation Jozan. His teapots range from classical to modern styles, boasting over 100 different shapes. In Heisei 6, he was recognized as a holder of Intangible Cultural Property by Aichi Prefecture for his Shudei teapots, and in Heisei 10, he was designated as Japan's Important Intangible Cultural Property Holder (Living National Treasure) for Tokoname ware (teapots), thus preserving the millennia-old tradition and history of Tokoname ware.
