Description: Japanese puzzle box with very detailed marquetry work. These boxes are made with no nails. The wood pieces are cut so precisely that they slip together seamlessly. This particular one is a Trigger box. There is a hidden panel on the side of the bos that slides to uncover a wooden trigger that , when pressed, releases a spring that releases the tray. There is very little written on these. They are an under researched and under appreciated artform. The Japanese Cultural ministry has declared these a nationally treasured artform. There are new ones being produced in Japan in two specific locations and they almost always have geometric designs. There are some nice You Tube videos on those. These are earlier, made from the early 1920's through 1940 and a few after the War in Occupied Japan. The boxes are assembled without nails or screws . The designs are made from paper thin slices of wood died, cut and glued on every surface. This one has a faded picture of two Japanese dolls. They will be packed securely and safely for shipment.
