Description: Japanese Holly (Box-Leaved Holly) Botanical Name: Ilex crenata This listing is for one (1) Japanese Holly plant that ranges in size between 4 and 6 inches in height. The plant you will receive will be between these ranges of size as there will be slight differences from the photos in the listing as no two plants are the same. They will be guaranteed vibrant and healthy and ready for transplanting. We do not ship with the pot as the pot allows for too much soil moisture evaporation. It will be securely adhered to the package wall for the safest shipping method possible. PLEASE BE ADVISED: From October to March, we ship these plants in their dormant state. This plant is evergreen, which means they will have still bear their leaves. The stem will be strewn with buds for this coming spring's growth. If you live in a southern state, these will push new growth upon planting them as dormancy is dependent on hours of daylight and temperature. We are located in New York State and temperatures can differ drastically around the country. Please contact us with any questions on dormancy. It can be found in thickets, woods, and wet places in the lowlands and mountains all across Japan. It is now widely grown as an ornamental. General Description: Ornamental evergreen shrub grown for its dense foliage. It’s popular among bonsai enthusiasts. Hardiness Zone: 5 to 8 Maintenance: Low Mature Height: 5 to 10 feet Mature Width: 5 to 8 feet Plant Details: Growth Habit: Slow growing, densely compact, multi-stemmed shrub with a rounded habit. Can be grown as a small upright tree. Leaf Structure: Convex, cup-shaped leaves with wavy margins. Glossy dark green with dull green undersides. Stem Structure: Current season’s growth is green, turning grey-green to grey-brown as it matures. Bark Structure: Green to light grey or brown, smooth appearance. Soil Preference: Acidic. They should also be planted in a protected area to prevent damage from cold winter winds. Fun Fact: Plants are dioecious, meaning they have separate male and female plants. Berries will only form on female plants, if pollinated by male plants. General Notes: Plants resemble Boxwood, hence them being known as Box-Leaved Holly. Drought and deer tolerant.
