Description: Up for sale is a copy of "CATALOGUE OF THE EXHIBITION OF FINE ARTS HELD BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION 1938 - PART 4, PAINTINGS IN WESTERN STYLE" Text is in English and Japanese. Plates of Japanese Paintings - Includes close to 350 plates. The book is bound in the traditional Japanese book binding style known as "fukuro-toji", which means "pouch binding." In this binding process, sheets of paper are printed (woodblock and/or text) on only one side. They are then folded in half with the printed side out. The folded printed sheets are then stacked together along with similarly printed and folded covers and the unit secured along the spine, which is the side opposite the folds, to form the book. This technique gives you the folded pages (double leaves) which are open at the top and bottom forming the pouch ("fukuro") which the binding technique is names for. As a general rule, the "fukuro-toji" books are secured/tied with (Yotsume toji bindings) in where four small holes are made along the spine edge and the sheets and covers are then bound together tightly with string that wrap around the spine. Generally, the spine is not covered except for small portions at the top and the bottom. Overall the book is in Good- Condition. There are a few nicks on the boards and the corners are bumped - some discoloration on the boards - the top seems a bit darker than the bottom. The cloth is fraying at the bottom of the front cover. The gold covers on the top and bottom of the spine are slightly fraying. There are some stains on the back cover and the corners are very dented. Internally, it is firmly bound with some wear and browning to the pages. There is heavy browning and spotting on the front and rear pasted pages and end pages. A few nicks or creases on some of the pages. The front end pages have wrinkles near the binding, as well. Also, there are dents (a half circle) in the bottom corner of the pages.
