Description: Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk and other woven fabric, the backside is white with a floral pattern while the main part is a dark reddish brown with embroidered gold and orange floral designs. It has kanji printed on the top. Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
