This masterpiece of Heian period architecture, sculpture, and craft is a National Treasure. It faces east towards the central island of a garden pond, symbolizing the Western Paradise. The hall is called "Phoenix Hall" because of the pair of gilt bronze phoenixes on its roof and its resemblance to a phoenix with spread wings. The main Buddha statue inside the hall, created by the renowned Heian period sculptor Jocho, has survived multiple disasters while much of the temple's buildings were lost. In 1994, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." The restoration was completed in 2014.
