Japanese “Oribe” granite stone lantern with an original patina from age, early to mid 20th century, Meiji to Taisho period. This is the classic Tea Master Oribe's style first observed in about the 17th century. Oribe was a leading 17th century Japanese tea master and designed this iconic lantern style especially for private tea gardens. They work especially well at night with an LED or candle. About Japanese lanterns: Stone lanterns, Ishidoro were introduced to Japan via Korea and China in the 6th century AD. They were used initially in temples and later shrines as votive lights. About the 16th century stone lanterns were adopted for secular purposes and designed and placed in the gardens of tea houses and private residences made famous by tea master Sen Rikkyu (1522-1592). The monumental and well-proportioned carved stone Kasuga style lantern is fashioned in six parts with an incised finial Hohju, lotus representational roof kasa, carved light chamber Hibukuro, engraved and embellished mid platform nakadai, simple banded cranes leg shaft sao, and base kiso hand-crafted of a quality shirakawa stone. History of Japanese Oribe lanterns: Oribe was the leading 17th century Japanese tea master after Sen No Rikyu -the father of the modern tea ceremony. Oribe designed this lantern to represent the secular nature of lanterns installed in private tea gardens- apart from shrine or temple applications . The Sanskrit lettering prevailed on some of these as Christian followers continued to practice their religion in secret and disguising their religious icons and graves as objects of Buddhist worship. It is thought that this version of Oribe lantern may have the Greek monogram “IHS” (iota-eta-sigma) carved into the cross part of the base below the central platform.
