Cotton played blues harp in Howlin' Wolf's band in the early 1950's and recorded in Memphis for Sun Records. He was then recruited by Muddy Waters to join his band in Chicago. He became the bandleader and stayed with the group until 1965. That year he formed the Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet. He first full album was produced by Mike Bloomfield and songwriter Nick Gravenites, who later were members of the band Electric Flag. Cotton played on Muddy Waters's Grammy Award -winning 1977 album "Hard Again," produced by Johnny Winter. Alligator Records released his 2010 album "Giant," which was nominated for a Grammy. His album "Cotton Mouth" includes appearances by Gregg Allman, Joe Bonamassa, Ruthie Foster, Delbert McClinton, Warren Haynes, Keb Mo, Chuck Leavell and Colin Linden. Cotton worked with many prominent musicians including the Grateful Dead, Steve Miller, Charlie Musselwhite, Santana, Taj Mahal, BB King, Paul Butterfield, Elvin Bishop, Keith Richards, Sonny Boy Williamson, and many others. Cotton passed away from pneumonia in March 2017 at the age of 81 in Austin, TX.
