Description: Beyond Life by James Branch Cabell. Published by Boni & Liveright in 1919 as part of the Modern Library. Softcover, bound in leatherette. 358 pages plus a five-page list of the Modern Library's offerings. Measures about 4 1/4" x 6 5/8". This is an old, pre-1925 printing. The cover shows the Boni & Liveright/Modern Library seal -- NOT the familiar Flying Torchbearer which came into use in 1925. This copy is in nice shape for its age. The covers are well-preserved. There are no bookplates, ink names, or pen/pencil notations. There is a small (1/2") tear in the half-title page, which does not affect the text — see photograph. The margins of the pages show some tanning due to age. James Branch Cabell (1879–1958) was an American author of fantasy fiction. His best-known book, Jurgen, A Comedy of Justice (1919), was the subject of a celebrated obscenity case shortly after its publication, in which Cabell and his publisher prevailed. Many of his novels are set in the fictional country of "Poictesme" (pronounced "pwa-tem"). Cabell's works have influenced numerous writers of fantasy and science fiction, including Neil Gaiman, Robert Heinlein, and Jack Vance. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
