Description: I’ve had these since I was a kid. I grew up in Stamford, CT and in the early 1960s, Baseball was KING! In those days, you were either a Yankee or Dodger fan. Many of the players chose to live across the river from NYC in the Stamford area where it was much more affordable. Before the time when salaries isolated athletes from common folk, they were accessible, they owned shops and they held second jobs in towns adjacent to where they entertained us on the diamonds. At our yearly Little League dinners, several were coerced to attend and likely were only offered dinner and drinks to do so. The gatherings were nothing elaborate, but to a kid, those who intermingled with us were larger than life and their smiles and autographs were imbedded in all our memories forever. Several years ago, I ran across these two programs buried away in darkness from those bygone days. They are from the years 1962 and 1964 and are covered with many of the attendees of the event. Several are very notable and include HOFs Yogi and Whitey and notables Ellie Howard, Mel Allen, and Howard Cosell amongst others. But the signature that stands out is the only one that I remember signing the program. Interestingly enough, he is not listed in the program. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson retired in Stamford in the High Ridge section after his playing days. Not long after, he passed on way too early in life, but he of course, left an indelible mark on history. The signature is unique because of the story behind it. As he began to sign the pamphlet, the pen he was using stopped functioning and his eyes met mine in failure. But, my uncle, who escorted me to the dinner, reached in his suit coat pocket to fetch a replacement as commonly carried in those times. Mr. Robinson then took the time to resume his signature where he had previously begun the ink work and the difference in color verifies that attention to detail from a man who had an obvious influence on the changing world. As my own life begins to wind down, I want to make sure that these mementos of the past do not get tossed into a landfill someday. I have no proof of authenticity although around 20 years ago they were sent to Heritage Auctions in Dallas, TX, verified and returned without certification and an offer was rendered but not accepted. Since I was present at the original event, I have no desire to go through that process again. The two unique and one-of-a-kind pieces belong together as they have always been, so please do not ask me to separate them. Thank you for looking.
