Description: Jack Dempsey Knocks Out Jess Willard 1919 - Postcard from Dempsey's Restaurant with his original signature In 1919, Jack Dempsey defeated Jess Willard, the reigning Heavyweight Championship of the World to take the title. Dempsey commissioned James Montgomery Flagg, painter and illustrator, to commemorate the historic heavyweight contest. In November 1944 the painting was unveiled at Jack Dempsey’s bar and restaurant in New York City, where it occupied a place of honor until the restaurant closed in 1974. The front of the postcard is from this iconic painting that was eventually donated to the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. The back includes Jack's signature, not the one printed on all the post cards, but an original. While we did not have this signature verified, it came from an estate with other sports memorabilia.
