His father was a wood-cutter employed in shaping bolts for shipbuilders, and the son followed the same occupation till his seventeenth year, when, having shown an aptitude for art by copying some miniatures, he was adopted by his father's landlord, William Mitford. Sherwin was sent to study in London, first under John Astley, and then for three years under Francesco Bartolozzi – for whom he is believed to have executed a large portion of the plate of Clytie, after Annibale Carracci, published as the work of his master." "Sherwin entered as a student of the Royal Academy, and gained a silver medal, and in 1772 a gold medal for his painting of "Coriolanus taking Leave of his Family". From 1774 till 1780 he was an exhibitor of chalk drawings and of engravings in the Royal Academy." "In 1785 he succeeded William Woollett as engraver to the king, and he also held the appointment of engraver to the Prince of Wales." A brief biography of J.B. Cipriani from royalacademy as follows: "Giovanni Battista Cipriani RA (1727 - 1785)" "A Founder Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, Giovanni Battista Cipriani was an Italian-born artist who designed the interior of the Academy’s first home at Somerset House." "Cipriani was born in 1727 in Florence. He began his artistic training with the Anglo-Florentine artist Ignazio Hugford, who also taught his compatriot and future fellow Royal Academician Francesco Bartolozzi. In 1750 Cipriani moved to Rome, where he met the architect William Chambers and sculptor Joseph Wilton. He travelled with them to England in 1755, where he lived for the rest of his life. Cipriani quickly established himself as a teacher of drawing and painting at the Duke of Richmond’s academy at Whitehall, and as a member of the St. Martin’s Lane Academy." $15.00 handling charge for packing materials.
