The model name is named after French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who is also known as the inventor of the Aqualung. In 1953, his book "The Silent World" became a bestseller. The back of the watch features a relief of a painting on the hull of Cousteau's ship, the Alcyone.
