Description: Description - Medieval, encaustic floor tiles, two, originally glazed, discovered in Shropshire, England, & made during the Medieval period, approximately 800 to 600 years ago, between 1200 to 1400 (photographs 1 to 14). The two encaustic floor tiles, Tile 1 (left of photographs 1 & 2, & photographs 3 to 8) & Tile 2 (right of photographs 1 & 2, & photographs 9 to 14), are approximately square in shape, relatively thick, & predominantly made from a dark orange clay. Both tiles also have an identical black decorative pattern inlaid into their top surfaces (photographs 3 & 9). This decorative pattern has a four petal flower positioned in the centre of the top surfaces of both tiles, & a border around it. The border is in the shape of a rhombus, that has curved sides. The pattern in the four corners of the top surfaces of both tiles, resembles a portion of two petals (photographs 3 & 9). There is a curved (quarter of a circle) border around each pair of petals, that includes an inner & outer curved line, with a thicker curved centre line between the two. There are several small dark orange circles or dots, along each curved centre line (photographs 3 & 9). The decorative pattern on the top surfaces of both tiles has worn over time (photographs 3 & 9). The four side surfaces & the bottom surface of each tile, includes a light & mid-grey colour, as cement would have originally been placed on these surfaces (photographs 4 to 8 & 10 to 14). More information about similar Medieval tiles can be found in the book 'MEDIEVAL LEAD-GLAZED EARTHENWARE TILES, 2' under 'LINE IMPRESSED DESIGNS 193-205', which was written by 'Elizabeth S. Eames', & published by 'BRITISH MUSEUM PUBLICATIONS LIMITED'. Condition - The decorative pattern on the top surface of Tile 1 has worn over time (photograph 3). The top surface of Tile 1 also includes numerous small scratches, areas of discolouration, shallow areas of missing material, & both small & large chips, especially along the edges (photograph 3). The four side surfaces of Tile 1 include numerous thin scratches & cracks, protrusions, small & large chips, areas of discolouration & glaze, & areas of light & mid-grey cement, from when the tile was originally cemented into a floor (photographs 4 to 7). The four corners of the side surfaces all have small amounts of missing material (photographs 4 to 7). The bottom surface of Tile 1 includes numerous thin cracks, chips, discolouration marks, shallow areas of missing material, light & mid-grey areas of cement, & missing material on two of the corners (photograph 8). The decorative pattern on the top surface of Tile 2 has worn over time (photograph 9). The top surface of Tile 2 also has numerous small scratches, areas of discolouration, a protrusion, chips, especially along the edges, & missing material on all four corners, two significantly (photograph 9). The four side surfaces of Tile 2 include numerous thin scratches & cracks, protrusions, chips, areas of discolouration & glaze, areas of missing material, & light & mid-grey areas of cement, from when the tile was originally cemented into a floor (photographs 10 to 13). All four of the corners of the side surfaces have missing material, two significantly (photographs 10 to 13). The bottom surface of Tile 2 includes numerous thin cracks, chips, areas of discolouration & glaze, areas of missing material, light & mid-grey areas of cement, & areas of missing material on all four corners, two significantly (photograph 14). However, generally the two Medieval, encaustic floor tiles are in reasonable condition, considering their age & previous use (photographs 1 to 14). Dimensions - The length of Tile 1 is 12.5 cm, the width 12.1 cm, the height 12.8 cm, & the weight 809 g (left of photographs 1 & 2, & photographs 3 to 8). The length of Tile 2 is 12.5 cm, the width 12.4 cm, the height 2.9 cm, & the weight 864 g (right of photographs 1 & 2, & photographs 9 to 14). The total weight of the two tiles is 1.673 kg (photographs 1 & 2).
