Description: Auction description Italian Renaissance Faces, Beautiful French Studies 1848, Listed Artist These small, expressive studies in pencil of medieval/early Renaissance faces, presumably after (Florentine?) frescoes or wall paintings, were made by a French artist travelling in Italy during the year 1848. They are of fine quality and remind me of some unforgettable Botticelli frescoes in the Louvre. They are unsigned, but the expert at the Paris fine arts auction where I obtained them last January believes them to be likely by by Francois Charles Savinien Petit (1815-1878), and that seems to me like a plausible attribution. Dimensions of one sheet are about 4.5 inches by 6 inches, and of the other (where the date can be found) are about 5 inches by 4.25 inches. The paper has toned and the pencil stroked have faded somewhat, but these are little works of expressive grace and beauty. An authenticated drawing in Renaissance style by Savenien Petit sold for $678 at a French auction in 2014. My opening price for these is very modest. Shipping within the U.S. will be $8.
