Description: ISLAMIC DYNASTIES, Ogedeid Mongols, temp. Qaidu, c. 668-701/ 1269-1302, AR dirham (23mm, 1.97gm), Baldat Otrar mint, dated AH 685. O: al-hamd lillah / al-mulk lillah; mint and date formula in margin. R: tamgha of Qaidu; in margin, al-imam al-a’zam al-Nasir amir al-mu’minin. Nyamaa 43 (Tuqa Timur); Album 1985 (Tuqa Timur). Decent strike with legible date and mint. When Genghis Khan died, the Mongol Empire was divided among his sons Ögedei, Chaghatai, Jochi and Tolui, each ruling his own territory or ulus. The coins of Qaidu are sometimes classed among those of the Chaghatayids because his issues largely derive from mints under their traditional authority. However, Qaidu was not a descendant of Chaghatai but of Ögedei, the successor of Ghengis as Great Khan. When Ögedei died in 1241, the various Mongol clans fell into intrigue and civil war. By 1260, the office of Great Khan had passed from the Ögedeids to the Toluids in the person of Kublai, who ruled from China and became increasingly Sinicized. Qaidu attempted to reassert the authority of the House of Ögedei, creating a rival khanate centered on the original Mongol homeland. The Chaghatayid khans became no more than Qaidu’s vassals, serving at his pleasure. Coins of this period are sometimes assigned to the Chaghatayids Tuqa Timur or Duwa Khan based on date but there is significant disagreement on the year in which Tuqa died and was replaced by Duwa. The coin offered here is anonymous, the only mark of authority being the tamgha of Qaidu displayed prominently on the reverse. TERMS OF SALE We combine shipping!
