During those same years, literature made its own history. By the 1840s, Irish writing formed a recognizable body of work, which later generations would draw on, quote, anthologize and dispute. Questions raised by novels, poems and plays of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries - the politics of language and voice; the relationship between literature and locality; the possibility of literature as a profession - resonated for many Irish writers over the centuries that followed and continue to matter today. Author Biography Claire Connolly is Professor of Modern English at University College Cork, Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, and a member of the Royal Irish Academy. Her book A Cultural History of the Irish Novel, 1790-1829 (Cambridge Studies in Romanticism, 2011) won the Donald J. Murphy Prize, awarded by the American Conference for Irish Studies. She has been a visiting Associate Professor of Irish Studies and English at Boston College, the OBrien Professor at Concordia University, Montréal and Parnell Fellow in Irish Studies at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge.
