COIN INFORMATION:The harp was chosen for the obverse of the coins, as it had been the heraldic emblem of Ireland for many centuries. The design of the harp featured on the coins is Metcalfe’s adaptation of the ‘Brian Ború Harp’, located in Trinity College Dublin. Percy Metcalfe (1895-1970) was the winner of the design competition for the pre-decimal coins. These designs were carried over to the post-decimal coins with small modifications.
