An original August 18, 1864 letter w printed "Fort Dodge Iowa Republican " letterhead, from BF Gue to Iowa Adjutant General Baker, re billing for printing Military General Orders issued by the Adjutant General. The reverse has a pencil note from General Baker to Assistant Adjutant General JC Culbertson to ok this military expenditure and forward to "Dewey" for payment. Comes w bio info. Adjutant General Baker managed the State's War efforts and his outstanding aid to soldiers and their families earned him the nickname 'The Soldier's Friend". The note by General Baker orders AAG John C Culbertson to address the matter. Culbertson, an Iowa City pioneer was the Iowa Volunteers Assistant Adjutant General and Paymaster. BF Gue was a notable Iowa Civil War editor who helped found the Iowa GOP and the Iowa Land Grant School, now Iowa State University at Ames. The General and Special Orders referred to by General Baker were printed and read to the Iowa volunteers to keep them informed of court-martials, military regulations, marching orders etc. The 1p 8 x 11" letter has minor edge wear, age spots , Overall VG.
