I have a certain love affair with the British doom death bands from that period, as well as a host of their semi-extreme European counterparts, yet the Americans were doing things very differently, at least when viewing the development of doom in the state of Maryland. Always attached much more strongly to classic metal, the irreverent nature of old stages like Pentagram and The Obsessed regarding speed and what I’ll call “stateliness” meant that the pool of new artists ranged quite widely in terms of actual sonic style. Granted, Unearthed only appeared in 2000 following a significant 7 year gap after the debut, yet Internal Void seem willing to just have fun and totally loosen up at times, notwithstanding some serious messages in the lyrics. Therefore, while most fans of that “stately” doom might find these cuts too groovy, too bluesy, and too full of jamming for their tastes, the crossover with typical heavy metal and even stoner audiences fills out the band’s attraction in the other direction. Now, I feel that the name Internal Void and the stained glass cover art suggest a more melancholy experience than ‘Pint of Love’ and ‘Blindside’ can maintain, though I suppose the commanding broadness of the guitar riffing and some powerful drumming can feel oppressive in places, despite being sort of comfortably oppressed by nice fat grooves. In many ways, Unearthed reminds me of Down’s second album, with occasional aggression and crushing sound sidelined by relaxed ideas and a lazy sense of timing; on the other hand, the quartet don’t actually change the formula as much as Down, mostly creating variety by applying different speeds, textures, and levels of tension, pounding into some of the grittier cuts and then wafting through others very easily. The easy swing of ‘Pint of Love’ recalls Pentagram (with whom both guitarist Kelly Carmichael and bassist Adam Heinzmann would do time for 2004’s Show ‘Em How) at low ebb, hazy soloing taking care of the interlude between verses before the band roll through the chorus with the bob of a country song. At the other end of the scale, ‘Seek the Truth’ hits more like a hardcore standard, racing at an appropriate tempo for a cut half as long as the others, an adventure related to the up-tempo ‘Beyond Anger’ despite that number’s groovier gait. Due to the fairly frequent changes to mood and approach, Internal Void may have made Unearthed a touch long at 55 minutes, especially with a Stray cover and 2 instrumentals clogging up the back end of the release a bit. Certainly if you’re appealing to more of a typical doomhead like myself, popping a self-explanatory song like ‘In a Bit of a Jam’ after the already varied and sprawling ‘Thoughts of Misconception’ feels like overkill, winding the album down too much at a point when I’d prefer it to be going deeper or going home. In some sense, I associate this honest excess with several other bands of that scene too, because the Internal Void experience strikes me as the blue collar equivalent of commercial bands putting too many cookie cutter tracks on their albums. Yes, thank you for your homemade jams, but I should have left 10 minutes ago. Hopefully that comforting analogy shows that, apart from the slightly muddled depth of the tracklisting, you could happily relax into Unearthed for a whole afternoon if you so desire. Occasionally, that’s just what I want as well. _____________________________________________________________ If you purchase multiple items, use Ebay's shopping cart - I use their shipping calculator to calculate combined postage.
