DO I NEED INKJET OR LASER DECAL PAPER?Inkjet decal paper is made for Inkjet printers ... Laser decal paper is made for Laser printers. Inkjet decal paper will NOT work properly with Laser printers ... Laser decal paper will NOT work properly with Inkjet printers. There are exceptions, but only if the paper description states that it will work for both types of printers. INKJET PRINTERSAn inkjet printer propels tiny droplets of ink onto the decal paper during printing and requires drying time.Decals may also need a sealer to help set the inks. Information on this page about drying time and sealers pertain to using an inkjet printer. LASER PRINTERSLaser printers use a special laser to produce an electrically charged image on a drum, which is then rolled through powdered toner. The toner then fuses onto the paper using heat. Because laser printers do not use wet inks, it requires no drying time, no special sealers, and tends to be more water resistant than the inkjet decals. SHOULD I USE WHITE OR CLEAR DECAL PAPER?The "Rule of Thumb" is to use white decal paper when you apply your decal to a dark surface and clear decal paper when you apply your decal to a light surface. When following this rule, the decals can be printed and applied easily.Home printers do not print the color "white". When you print an image on white paper that has the color "white" in it, the white color you see is actually the color of the white paper ... not ink. If you printed the same image on clear decal paper ... the white area will be transparent ... no ink. When applied, the transparent areas would be the color of your object. EXAMPLE: (Using White Decal Paper on a Darker or Colored Surface) Let's say you have a red mug and you've printed a decal of a white dog on white decal paper. You'll cut the dog photo out to trim away any white paper (probably in a square, round, oval, etc to keep the decal looking neat) ... then apply it to the mug. You have a white dog ... not white ink ... but the color of the white paper. When you have the color white in your image and apply it to a dark or colored object, you will want to use white paper. EXAMPLE: (Using Clear Decal Paper on a Light Surface) Now let's say you have a white mug and you've printed a decal of the same white dog on clear decal paper. When the image was printed on the clear paper, the dog was not printed white ... it was clear/transparent ... you could see through the paper. When the decal was applied, the white dog became the color of the white mug showing through the paper. Had this same image on the clear paper been applied to the red mug, the dog would have shown through as being a red dog. White paper could have also been used on the white mug allowing the white paper to be the color of the dog instead of showing through to the mug. Either way would have worked, but in most cases, the translucent look gives a nicer appearance when used on a light object like a white mug. You will also find that White Decal Paper prints your colors stronger and more vibrant than the Clear decal paper, but the Clear paper will not have the White paper background showing in and around the image. EXAMPLE: (Using Clear Paper on a Dark Background) There is a definite reason why using clear paper on a dark background doesn't work. Once your printed image is applied to a dark background, the decal will loose their colors and barely show up ... they just fade right into the dark object. The reason is because the clear paper is translucent, and the dark background is showing through the image colors and darkening them. Colors that are lighter than the color of the surface you are applying them to will fade and become almost invisible. Other surface colors can even change the finished color of the decal. For instance, if you put a blue decal on a yellow object, your decal will most likely appear to be green. The color "green" is a mixture of blue and yellow so when applied to the yellow background, the translucent (see through) blue decal turns green. Although the decal papers can usually provide great decals for most projects, when trying to copy professionally made decals, the decal papers for home printers are not always able to provide the desired results. USING CLEAR PAPER ON GLASSLet's say for example that you want to make a decal that has the names of the bride and groom for a clear wedding glass. You would use clear decal paper so that the area will be transparent between the letters, showing only the clear glass. Cut out the decal close to the letters, keeping the cut out shape in a block, oval, etc. that will make for a neat cut label. For this type of project, you will need to use colors for your lettering or image that has no white in it. If you used white decal paper, you would have a white background between and around the letters. It would be the same as printing the names on a white piece of paper and applying it to the glass. This would also apply to other glass items ... windows, mirrors, clear plastic, etc. White paper can be used for images and lettering when you do want a white background. Keep in mind that clear decal papers are not usually going to be washable without the ink coming off. Using a clear varnish or sealant can help but even then the object should be cleaned gently without submerging in water. HOW CAN I TELL HOW THICK THE DECAL PAPER IS?In comparison, a sheet of printer paper is about 4 mil thick. This will give a general idea of how thick the decal paper is when you see the thickness shown in mils. ARE DECALS DISHWASHER SAFE ... CAN THEY BE USED ON DISHES?Decals made with home printers are not dishwasher safe or microwave safe. The decals are primarily for decorative use and should not be applied to dishes that will come into contact with food. The decals can be used on a mugs, glasses, cups, etc. for drinking and should be applied a couple inches down from the top rim. Some decal papers that state they are waterproof can be gently washed even though it's best to avoid submerging the decals in water. The inks can begin to come off and the adhesive can also begin to loosen. CAN DECALS BE USED OUTDOORS?The majority of decal papers are considered to be for indoor use and will last for years, although there are decal papers that can withstand moisture and sun rays better than others. Applying a good varnish and/or sealer will help tremendously. WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN DECAL PAPER IS CONSIDERED WATERPROOF?Waterproof: impervious to, or totally unaffected by water.Water-Resistant: resisting ... though not entirely preventing the overall, long-term effects of water. The Laser decal papers are more waterproof and water resistant than the Inkjet papers. It is safe to say the decal paper itself is indeed waterproof and will not be affected by water. Once printed, the printing is considered water-resistant. (resisting though not entirely preventing the overall, long-term effects of water). Water-resistant Inkjet decal sheets are top-coated with a substance that "locks in the ink". It is important to achieve a balanced ratio between ink used and top-coating available for locking. If too much ink is used and not enough top-coating is available to lock it down, you will see some bleeding when in contact with water. This is easily solved by reducing your ink saturation level in your printer settings. It is always a good idea to use a clear sealer over your finished decal, possibly even two or three coats, allowing it to dry between coats. It is best to use genuine brand name inks for your printer. The waterproof decals can be used for bath items, bumper stickers, helmets, and other objects that will be exposed to water and moisture, but it is not recommended for objects that will be exposed to constant submerging in water .... for instance, boats, pool items, etc. Rain and snow can also be considered submerging in water, depending on how saturated the decal becomes. The problem is not always the inks ... constant submerging in water can also cause adhesives to loosen. CAN DECALS BE FIRED IN A KILN AFTER APPLICATION?No ... the inks used in all home printers are not ceramic or glass inks and cannot withstand the high temperatures used in such firings. The Laser Water Slide Decals can be baked in a 250 degree oven for about 20 minutes for a shiny baked on look. Your object must be able to withstand the heat of the oven. For instance ... don't put a plastic cup in the oven ... it will melt! This process does NOT make the item dishwasher or microwave safe. HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE INKS TO DRY?Drying times for the inks will vary depending on the printer ... mainly due to the type of inks being used in the printer. Some printers use inks that are fast drying whereas other printers have inks that take longer ... some much longer. The longer drying time is not due to the decal paper - it depends on the type of inks used in the different types of printers. However, it is important to use the proper settings for your printer. Too much ink saturation can cause inks to stay wet. DO DECALS NEED A SEALER AFTER APPLICATION?It's always a good idea to seal your finished piece with a clear sealer. This helps seal the ink, protects from scratching, fading, etc. Krylon Clear Coat is a good brand. (Gloss or Matte) Any brand will work but it's best not to use the inexpensive brands that may not seal well or may yellow after time. Clear sealers are available most any place where paint supplies are sold. WHAT EXACTLY DOES "PERMANENT" ADHESIVE MEAN?The adhesive decal papers (unless it says "removable") are considered a permanent adhesive. Meaning that once it's applied and the glue has set, it's there to stay. (This is not include submerging in water). Most of the decals can be moved around when applying and doesn't stick that fast. Most can even be removed after a few days before the adhesive becomes set. Permanent decals that have had time to set can usually be removed using alcohol, finger nail polish, or other products that can remove stickers, but it can also leave sticky residu behind or damage the surface. The removable adhesive decal papers are best when you want a decal that can easily be removed leaving a clean and undamaged surface. WHAT IS "REMOVABLE" DECAL PAPER?Unlike the permanent adhesive, removable decal paper sticks to the object but can easily be removed leaving no adhesive residue behind. This decal paper works well for temporary signs and window clings ... anything printable that you will want to remove at a later date. WHAT IS "CONTOURING" DECAL PAPER?Most all decal papers will bend to a degree on flat surfaces. For instance ... applying the decal to a round object with a flat surface like a mug, jar, bucket, etc. The object is round but the sides are flat, unlike a round ball where there is no flat side. Decal papers that are considered contouring have the ability to bend around more complex curves with minimal folding and creases. ARE THERE DECAL PAPERS WITH ADHESIVE ON THE PRINTABLE SIDE?Decal papers do not have adhesive on the printable side. If you feel you would need this type of paper it's probably because you want to apply the decal to be viewed properly on the other side of a glass. This is done by "reversing" or "mirroring" your image when you print it. You will find this in your printer settings. It will actually print your image backwards but when you apply it, the image will show through your glass correctly. This only works with the "clear" decal paper where you do not have the color white in your image. White decal paper is used when you have the color "white" in your image, but the white decal paper can only be used to be viewed on the inside of the window. **This Is a Tip on How To Use The CLEAR Decal Papers to Create a White Background That Can Be Visible From The Other Side of a Glass: (1) Using CLEAR paper ... print your image on the "reverse" or "mirror" setting so that it's printed backwards.(2) Spray over the image side of the sheet with White Acrylic Paint. Let it completely dry. Spray with clear sealer ... let dry.(3) If your decal needs cut from the sheet, cut your decal as closely to the image as possible to keep from having a large white border around it. Remove backing and apply. Your decal will now be visible from the outside of the glass and have the color white in your image. If you've never printed a mirrored image before this can seem confusing until you actually do it. To help better understand, you might first reverse your image and print it on plain paper. Then pretend you are peeling the backing off of the paper leaving adhesive on the back side of your printed image side. Now turn it over so that the adhesive side will be applied to the glass and notice how the image is showing through correctly. STORING THE DECAL PAPER: (IMPORTANT)The proper storage of decal paper is something that is often ignored. The paper will react with changes in moisture and temperature. If loose sheets are left out of the open, the top sheet may start curling up and the sheets below will do the same one by one over the course of days or weeks. Store the media in a dry, cool place as humidity and moisture may damage sheets. The best way to store unused decal paper is in a plastic bag. Printed decals should be used within days of printing or stored as described above. DO THE DECAL PAPERS WORK WITH ALL BRANDS OF PRINTERS?The paper manufacturers state that the decal papers will work with "MOST" brands of printers. Due to the many different types and brands of printers, it would be impossible to guarantee that all papers are compatible with all printers. Printer settings are not the same on every printer so it sometimes takes a little experimenting. Problems can occur when using the thicker decal papers with desktop printers that have the bottom tray paper feed. Because the paper has to make a complete turn, some papers will not feed through the printer. Top loading printers with a relatively straight path works well. ADDITIONAL HELP I've found that although this page is filled with lots of detailed information about the decal papers, I get many emails asking "exactly" what decal paper do I need for my project? It is confusing because there are decal papers that all do the same thing. It is often just a matter of preference that is only known after testing them. I can suggest the papers that will work for the project, but am not able to know exactly which one you will prefer. The decal papers can be purchased in very small quantities and is a good way to be able to test them before purchasing a larger quantity. NOTE: When purchasing the different sheets, be sure to CLICK "Add to Cart" ... NOT ... "Buy it Now". This Will Put Each One Of Your Decal Paper Purchases In Your Cart So You Can Make ONE SINGLE PAYMENT For All Items And Receive One Combined Shipping Charge. If You CLICK "Buy it Now" And Make A Separate Payment For Each Purchase, You Will Automatically Be Charged A Shipping Fee For Each Purchase. This is a basic guide to help get you started in the right direction. The above information can then be used for more detail. (1) Inkjet or Laser Paper?Choose the decal paper for the type of printer you are using .... Inkjet or Laser. (2) Clear or White Decal Paper?Look at the beginning of this page where you see the examples. Determine which paper color is suitable for your specific project. (3) Will your decal be exposed to moisture? If so, choose a paper that is considered to be waterproof/water resistant, but first read about the waterproof decal papers. (4) What type of adhesive are you needing?Do you want your decal to be permanently attached or one that can easily be removed? STILL NEED HELP?Feel free to message me if you still have more questions ... I'll help the best I can.
