Description: Cochiti Pottery Figure by Inez Ortiz. Signed at base with simply an M for Mapuwana. Measures approximately 6 1/2" tall. CONDITION: a very few pin prick size glaze flakes ( one on mitt is largest and 2 at foot). Possible (expertly done if so) restoration to curvature above head. See last photos. May have been a brush stroke of slip by Inez too. The only evidence I can find is the underside has a slightly lighter look at corner. It is very smooth otherwise and I am unable to discern anything amiss from a top down view. An extra sinew strap around neck is placed and that is used to affix figure to stand. The figure does stand fine on its own if you prefer to remove it. PROVENANCE: This comes from the Hayes Collection. Allan and Carol Hayes were experts in Native American Pottery and wrote a series of well received publications on the subject. This figurine is in their book, Pottery of the Southwest. A photo from the book showing this exact figure is shown in the images along with an image of the cover however, the book nor a copy of the image from the book is included in the sale. Packing and shipping: This will be packaged with thought and utmost care in order to arrive to you safely.
