Description: Indonesian Wayang Golek (Shadow Puppet) Doll For centuries, the art of Wayang (traditional shadow puppets) has become an inseparable part of the lives of the people on the islands of Java and Bali and is a prominent part of Indonesian culture. This long-lived art is among the world's greatest story-telling traditions. It comes in the form of theater (wayang orang), three-dimensional wooden puppets theatre (wayang golek), and leather puppet shadow theatre (wayang kulit). This is a beautiful example of Wayang Golek. Wayang means puppet. Golek means rod (as the puppets are operated by wooden rods). Therefore, Wayang Golek means Rod Puppets. This character is an elegant supportive character of an epic drama. Traditional Wayang Golek dramas feature those who fight against evil, mystical beings to (usually) end happily. The performances take place on special events: weddings, religious ceremonies or cultural days. They begin at 9:30 pm and last until 4:30 am in the morning! I purchased this wonderful Wayang Golek in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1995. Height: 21 1/2” X 6" It's never been used or displayed so it's in great condition, w/ only a few very minor scuffs from the packing, transporting and unpacking process. A rare and interesting addition to your collection OR a very unique gift!
