Description: Rare original antique print from an 1870s illustrated journal. It depicts the Indians collecting their rations (sugar, beef, coffee and flour) at the Red Cloud Agency No. 2 in Nebraska, near Crawford. Above the picture is a 2-inch article on the subject. It describes the picture and discusses it in the racist fashion of the day. The Indians are described as "proverbially improvident and shiftless" who will feast on the food until it is gone, and then starve in the remaining weeks. The Red Cloud Agency was an Indian agency for the Oglala Lakota as well as the Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho, from 1871 to 1878. It was located at three different sites in Wyoming Territory and Nebraska before being moved to South Dakota. It was then renamed the Pine Ridge Reservation. This was Red Cloud Agency No. 2 (1873-1877). It was in the northwestern corner of Nebraska, near the present town of Crawford, overlooking the White River. The Red Cloud Agency was the center of much activity during the Great Sioux War of 1876-77. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills about half of it, measuring about 9 x 6.5 inches, with a caption below it. The page has an archival tape repair at the bottom of the picture/caption area. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
