Marked the contents, it would not be the Interest of my constituents for me to strictly adhere to the Instructions pointed out in your letter of the Instant for sundry reasons Viz when we compared the Census taken in this State the city and county of Albany would be entitled to 17 Members for Assembly this alarm’d the Middle and South’n Members they Therefore with the intentions of Making us Brake politics propose a division of the county of Albany which is agreed to by them to a man to approve a Dead Majority would be a folly a division will undoubtedly take place in a few days, the plans for dividing which to me appears most convenient for the people and which I believe will be carry’d through in all the towns on the east side of Hudson’s river to compose one County, all the Towns on the West side of Hudson’s river and on the North of the Mohawk to compose one other county. Doct. Williams opposeth it and puts in for Cambridge and Easton to be annexed to Washington County. He and his party is not Very powerful, we have appointed for Committee of appointment Peter Schuyler, Isaac Roosevelt, Thomas Tillotson, and Alex’r Webster, so much for Politics. Serv’t, Simon Berry.” BERRY PROPOSES THE CREATION OF RENSSELAER AND SARATOGA COUNTIES FROM THE LARGE ALBANY COUNTY AND HE ENDORSES THOMAS TREDWELL FOR THE 1791 1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF NEW YORK SPECIAL ELECTION Sidney Berry (1745-1820) was an American soldier and politician who served as a colonel and quartermaster in Hunterdon’s Militia within the 4th New Jersey Regiment having fought at the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth and an extensive amount of smaller engagements. His Monmouth County, New Jersey home was used as George Washington’s headquarters. After the war, Berry moved to New York where he served as Albany County’s first elected member to the NY State Assembly and Saratoga County’s first Judge and Surrogate. “WHEN WE COMPARED THE CENSUS TAKEN IN THIS STATE THE CITY AND COUNTY OF ALBANY WOULD BE ENTITLED TO 17 MEMBERS FOR ASSEMBLY THIS ALARM’D THE MIDDLE AND SOUTH’N MEMBERS THEY THEREFORE WITH THE INTENTIONS OF MAKING US BRAKE POLITICS PROPOSE A DIVISION OF THE COUNTY OF ALBANY…I BELIEVE WE SHALL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE YOUR FATHER IN CONGRESS, THIS MATTER WILL COME ON THIS WEEK. SCHUYLER.” Sent to one of the sons of Thomas Tredwell, contains two pages on a single leaf, measures 8.875 by 8.25 inches, and in very good to fine condition with dampstaining and small areas of paper loss to the center from opening the wax seal.
