Description: Ariston Illinois Watch Co. 14/12 size 23 jewel open face pendant-set Ariston pocket watch. An excellent top grade example of this rare and elegant private label watch, the Ariston series was produced by Illinois for the Marshall Field & Co. of Chicago, Illinois. This example features a Grade 510 movement with gold jewel settings, gold balance screws, gold train wheels, and a striped pattern nickel damaskeen. Watch is tripled signed with an Ariston marked movement, case, and dial. Dial is double-sunk enamel with elegant tall Arabic hour numerals. Case is gold-filled with initials engraved to its rear. Movement serial number is 2386751. Running and a nice looking movement overall with some typical mild surface marks. Larger winding wheel has a small patch of oxide to its concave portion. Dial faces up beautifully though does have a few mild flaws evident on close scrutiny - a tiny nick to upper-left rim of its seconds-register, a very faint hairline to the left side of its center section, a small edge flake under case bezel at 27 minutes, and some scattered mild fine glaze scratches and tiny surface and edge nicks. Case has a very nice overall in-hand look and feel with good engraving detail to its rear initials. Case bezel opens somewhat wide of 90 degrees to approximately the 105 degree to 110 degree position when fully opened and when bezel is closed it leaves a narrow bit of gap to the case band around its lower portions. Case bow is a replacement that is marked "METAL" to its reverse and is a bit more of a rose gold tone than remainder of case. Glass crystal has some fine scratches and small surface nicks.
