Description: - Here is an extremely rare circa 1925 ILLINOIS 23 Jewel, “ MARKED 60 HOUR” Sangamo Special 16 size green gold filled pocket watch – a 23 Jewel Railroad Grade timepiece that needs no introduction. The much rarer “marked 60 HOUR” version of this already scarce Art Deco era 23 jewel Illinois Sangamo Special holds at least a 3-STAR rating on the rarity scale with a very small production run. The watch is just stunning – the classic screw case has no wear thru and no personalization – there are no dings or dents, the deeply carved edges and similar detail to the rigid bow are handsome and even the large and smooth as silk knurled crown shows no wear. The 2-tone double-sunk silver dial is gorgeous with only the slightest patina and no issues to mention, no lines, chips, flakes or anything – dial is killer - I did not remove the front cover, there is some obvious dust on the surface. The bold, raised black numerals and black Gothic Diamond hands with original blueing complete the mid-1920s look. The super rare Lever Setting movement is serial number 4758381 – fully signed SANGAMO SPECIAL 23 HOUR MOTOR BARREL ADJUSTED SIX POSITIONS and SIXTY HOUR – signed on the plate Illinois Watch… and also D.R. for Double Roller, which does not appear on all 60 Hour examples. The watch has been in estate storage for decades and has not been serviced – it has run for days at a time, accurately and without hesitation - winding and setting easily. However, with all vintage watches no matter how fine, a cleaning and/or service after years of storage is both deserved and recommended. The heavy back cover is fully signed Sangamo Special in script – also Wadsworth Quality 14 KARAT GOLD FILLED PAT’S PEND’G and case number 7986180. Lastly, I want to note the extraordinary beaded edge and to be clear about the reference to the Green Gold Filled case - I have seen other such examples and the greenish cast is subtle – in fact you may not agree with the designation and I am no expert.
