Description: Rare Humbolt Basal Notched Medium Altatl Dart Point, 1-11/16 inch length X 19/32 or 5/8 inch in width. Well made dart of black obsidian with horizontal Traverse flaking. Blade edges exhibit serration and edge wear. Tip has wear and minor damage as well as one ear. Basal notched exhibits basal grinding. Very nice example of point type estimated around 5,000 to 8,000 years old. This dart point is found in the far west generally in the Great Basin States especially Nevada. Examples have been found in Oregon, Tule Lake, CA, Bishop, CA and Nevada. Similar points of Humbolt variants have also been found in Idaho and Utah. Dated to the Early to Mid-Archaic 8,000 to 5,000 years BP. Described as medium to large sized lanceolate dart point with concave base with rounded basal tangs or ears. Some examples exceeding 4 inches in length. Widest at it’s base. This point is scarce in the region it is generally found.
