Description: Here is a 1928 first edition copy of a wonderfully illustrated photography book depicting homes recently built or about to be constructed in the prestigious neighborhood of Homeland in north Baltimore City. Homeland was being developed by The Roland Park Company of Baltimore, which had also developed its nearby namesake neighborhood to the layout provided by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. The title page describes Homeland as "... a tract of 391 acres, formerly the Perine estate, lying in the northern suburbs of Baltimore within the city limits, between Charles Street Avenue and York Road. It is part of the Roland Park-Guilford-Homeland District of 1500 acres of restricted land, planned and developed by The Roland Park Company during the past thirty-seven years." The book includes a two-page Foreword and 21 full-page photographic plates of lovely homes, each with a caption on the facing page. Note the term "restricted land"--the neighborhoods of the district were subject to covenants that restricted Blacks from purchasing property or living there, unless they were servants, of course. The Roland Park Company was one of the pioneers of utilizing restrictive covenants to ensure the homogeneity of its communities, under the guise of promoting neighborhood quality of life. This large book, measuring 11.5" x 15 ", is in Good condition in green boards with a darkened beige cloth spine and a gilt title to the front cover. The boards show some light soiling and water stains and various stray marks and scuffs. Extremities are rubbed and the corners and spine ends show wear and some bumping. The endpapers show age toning and some finger smudges. The front pastedown has a blank, mounted presentation card reading "Compliments of the Roland Park Company." There is a trace of water staining to the very top margin of the half-title page and several subsequent pages; otherwise contents are generally clean, with pages showing a bit of mellow age toning. The gutter of the pages following the final photograph is cracked, exposing the webbing beneath. Though this crack causes the rear cover to feel somewhat loose, the covers remain attached and the pages are firmly bound. Despite the faults, this is a good example of a scarce book.
