Description: Honeycomb Calcite • The Utah State StoneSo, What is the Fuss?Well, for starters, it’s unique to Utah. In fact, the only known place in the world where you can get this variety of calcite is from this one deposit. Which, for the record, was discovered by Floyd Anderson in the fall 1995 while hunting elk. If you’re wondering why no one found it sooner, the fact that it is located 10,500 feet above sea level in a remote part of the High Uinta Mountains probably has something to do with it. Tell me More ...There are several notable things that set this specimen apart from other types of calcite.• Colors that range from a soft, sunshine lemon yellow to a deep, rich golden amber.• Unique cell patterns that produce a stunning crystal appearance.• Optical translucency that allows light to pass through the mineral, giving it a warm, golden glow.• The ability to take and hold a mirror-like polish and it does not fade easily in sunlight like other forms of calcite. The patterns in this stone change depending upon the point of origin of the cell growth. Sometimes it is a tight “honey sugar” look full of small hexagonal cells grouped close together. In other areas of the deposit it has precipitated to produce large cell areas that look like “petrified honey.” This variety truly produces the opportunity for one of a kind pieces each time an artist goes to work.Regardless of how the crystals form this stone is characteristically transparent and translucent. The presence of iron and sulfur impurities creates a warm, luminous glow. Especially when any kind of light, artificial, natural, direct or indirect, passes through the crystal matrix. As amazing as this rock is the one thing it does not do is fluoresce in UV light. Guess you can’t have it all. Metaphysical Attributes This is an energizing stone that has a soft, soothing energy, it activates your crown and solar chakras. It also … • Alleviates stress and induces serenity. • Gently uplifts and amplifies energies • Brings optimism, and meaning to life. • Balances emotions • Increases perception of your surroundings boosts memory. And It ís Famous Too !On March 16, 2021, Governor Spencer Cox signed House Bill 188, officially recognizing honeycomb calcite as Utah’s state stone. It joined topaz, the state gem, coal, the state rock and the Allosaurus, our state dinosaur. And, if you happen to visit the state capital in Salt Lake City, it is embedded in the state emblem on the floor of the rotunda. Any Idea How it was Formed? The event that brought everything into play was a collision between the Pacific plate and the North American plate. Roughly 70 million years ago these two plates began smooshing into one other. That event is known as the Laramide Uplift. All told it took about 36 million years. When it was done it produced mountain ranges from California, east to Colorado, including the Uinta Mountains in Utah.Pushing the Uinta mountains up out of the crust created huge cracks called faults. These were important because they provided a path for the hot, mineral rich water to rise up from inside the Earth. From 70 to 34 million years ago hot water from the sandstone was forced up into the faults. It rose through the organic shale layer absorbing the sulfur present in the rock as it rose. When it pushed further up into the limestone layer the hot, acidic, water reacted with the calcite in the limestone to create the golden, honeycomb calcite you see today.
