EASTERN TRADITION – When Christ was alive, Abgar the ruler of Syrian Edessa was afflicted with leprosy and although he never saw Christ he believed in him and his emissaries entreated Christ to visit him – since Christ could not visit him King Abgar asked his court painter to paint an image of Christ – he tried in vain to capture Christ’s essence – knowing this Christ called to the painter from the crowd and Christ taking water and a clean towel wiped his face leaving His image. Christ sent this image to Abgar where it healed him and many people. Eventually Abgar was baptized by St Thaddeus the Apostle of the 70 and the image was venerated there until one of Abgar’s decedents fell into idolatry. The king had the imaged sealed in the wall of the city gate where it was hidden for years. It was discovered during a siege of the city by the Persians. The image was processed around the walls of the city preserving it from the Persian invasion. The “image” was later sent to the Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, where it either was taken by the Crusaders during the fall of the Byzantine Empire and later sunk on a boat going to Venice or that it was taken to a monastery in Genoa where is venerated today. WESTERN TRADITION – This is believed to be a Medieval Christian tradition dated around the translation of the relics to Italy in the 1500s. Christ on the “Via Dolorosa” going to Calvary was greeted by a woman follower named Veronica (whose name means “true image”) who gave him a towel to wipe His Face. This incident of Veronica’s Veil is commemorated in the Western devotion of the Stations of the Cross. Tradition asserts this Veil healed many, quenched thirst, restored sight and even raised some dead. Veronica is said to have presented it to the Roman Emperor Tiberius.
